Cavalcade win for edinburgh
1 January 1970

After all of the rain in Edinburgh recently we were delighted when the sun shone for the 27th Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade. Radio Lollipop has taken part in the procession, which marked the start of Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival for the last 10 years or so. This year the team came up with an innovative way to decorate their float for this year’s special Golden Jubilee Cavalcade.

The float was very in keeping with the royal theme. A giant castle was set on the back of our trailer, with acres of golden fabric, a royal ‘marquee’ and kings, queens, princes and princesses.

However, the castle was no ordinary piece of masonry…we used an inflatable bouncy castle!! Securely anchored to the back of our 40ft flatbed trailer the bouncy castle provided the centrepiece for a special Jubilee Cavalcade

Colourful shields were decorated by patients at the Sick Children’s Hospital and are displayed along the length of the trailer. On board the float were Radio Lollipop volunteers, patients and ex-patients from the Sick children’s hospital. All were dressed in royal attire – princes and princesses, kings and queens, even a court jester!

The Radio Lollipop float is well known in the Cavalcade for being one of the loudest. We have a powerful 12 speaker sound system pumping out loud and lively music throughout the parade. Our stewards and presenters, David and Graham entertained the 170,000 strong crowd with their juggling and antics.

Everyone who took part had a great time, and to top everything off we even won a prize – Best Animated Float in Community category! So well done everyone for their hard work!

Radio Lollipop would like to say a special thanks to Colin Palmer at Junior Promotions for providing the bouncy castle, Jim Simpson at RDL Distribution for providing the trailer and truck, and Chief Superintendent Jim Pryde from Lothian & Borders Police for his help in building and storing the float.
