Children in Melbourne get the Lollipop Experience!
24 October 2013

Radio Lollipop volunteers at the Monash Children’s Hospital in Melbourne are finding creative ways to make sick children smile as they celebrate Children’s Week with a range of activities for the kids.

The power of Radio Lollipop was certainly felt by one mum in particular when her four year old daughter went from screaming uncontrollably to laughing and smiling within minutes of meeting our volunteers.  When our volunteers discovered the little girl crying, they knew exactly how to turn that frown upside-down. Bubbles and a balloon seemed to take the sadness away, and before they knew it the little girl and her mum were in such good spirits that they decided to join in and do some craft activities in the playroom which lead to the creation of one brightly coloured parrot! The little girl was having so much fun, that she even agreed to have her face painted!

It’s been a long wait since Radio Lollipop first demonstrated their service at the hospital for Children’s Week in 2012. And now it seems that Radio Lollipop is here to stay!

Having spent the last 12 months recruiting volunteers, the very first Radio Lollipop Melbourne team were ready to find those smiles. The team set up a playroom in the hospital foyer and were pleasantly surprised by the constant stream of children and adults lining up to do craft activities.

Every night they have surprised the children with a brand new theme.. from clowns, under the sea and jungle theme, the children have pushed their creative skills to new limits and are even showing our volunteers a thing or two! Thankfully our Melbourne volunteers are a highly creative bunch, including Michelle who wowed everyone with her magnificent face painting skills.

We sincerely thank the nursing staff at Monash Children’s Hospital who continue to make us feel very welcome. We are so pleased to be able to spend time with children in their time of need.
