Gold coast united score smiles from the kids at radio lollipop
26 October 2011

Gold Coast United’s Jake Barker-Daish, Dylan McGowan and Glen Moss had a ball visiting the kids at Radio Lollipop Gold Coast on Monday, the first of monthly visits planned for the 2011/2012 football season ahead.

The boys got straight into the games playing Table Tennis, Foosball, Jenga and UNO with the kids. A couple of the boys had a go painting a soccer player picture, our craft for the evening. Our Radio Lollipop Volunteer Marissa even had GC United themed paint out on our craft tables, blue, yellow and white.

There were a few competitions as to what player could paint his soccer player picture the best. The winner was judged by the young girls we had in the studio. They told us Dylan was the winner with his blue and yellow coloured picture, despite their comments of a ‘vomit coloured’ t-shirt. The runner up was Jake but the judges told him he used ‘too much black’.

There were table tennis battles, playing in the cubby house painted by our very on Radio Lollipop kids and a few shout outs on the Radio to our Gold Coast Lollipoppers. Filling the studio was laughter, energy and many statements from the young kids about GC United players being their ‘best friends’. The boys made quite an impression.

The boys also visited the wards to see the patients who were unable to make it down to the studio. A young five year old boy, who is a major soccer fan, had recently been brought into the ward. His face lit up when GC United suddenly appeared around his bed and handed him a signed poster. It was a very special moment to watch.

For Jake and Dylan it was their first time visiting the ward with Radio Lollipop. They had a great time and told us it was a real eye opener, they loved acting like a kid again and they look forward to coming back again soon. I’m sure they secretly enjoyed the crafts too!

A big thank you to Gold Coast United for visiting the children at Radio Lollipop and thank you also to Nicole, GC United’s Community and Events Manager, for organising the visit with us. Our Radio Lollipop Volunteers and the kids at Gold Coast Hospital look forward to seeing you next month.
