Radio lollipop invades the famous barrowlands

On Friday 4th of December, the Radio Lollipop team (Andrea, George & Fiona) braved the elements of a harsh Glasgow winter, to raise funds for our essestinal play service. Our volunteers joined the famous Scottish band, RUNRIG and managed to raise a total of £368 pounds, by doing a door collection outside the Glasgow Barrowlands.

Andrea would like to thank Tom at the Barrowlands. Steve, Runrigs Manager and of course, Moria the promoter, for letting our volunteers collect money for such a great cause.

A great time was had by all, even though it took 8 coffee’s for the team to get back to normal body tempature.

Radio Lollipop would like thank all who donated that night and we would like to wish them all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Fundraising ball for gnch appeal

Radio Lollipop are one of 8 charities supported by “The Great North Children’s Hospital Appeal”, aiming to raise one million pounds for the new children’s hospital due to open in Newcastle.

This is a hospital designed to look as little like a hospital as possible. It’s a nurturing environment, a place where children and their parents can feel more at ease, however long their stay. Staffed by world-class doctors and nursing staff using the very latest equipment and medical techniques, the new children’s hospital will care for young people with a huge variety of conditions.

However, all of our patients will definitely have one thing in common. Being in hospital is not top of their list of things to do! That’s why the hospital includes a 50-seat cinema that will screen the very latest films, while the designers of the new ‘penthouse’ area at the children’s hospital should have a good idea of what teenagers want – they’re teenagers themselves. And because the hospital knows that kids of all ages need their own space, three out of four of the hospital’s 245 beds will be in private rooms. While en suite bathrooms and sleeping area for parents in their child’s bedroom are all part of a deliberate effort to create more privacy and improve conditions for both patients and their families.

The hospital will also have a state-of-the-art Radio Lollipop studio, broadcasting to the wards and inviting children to be part of the show.

We would like to announce in advance, a special fundraising dinner for the GNCH Appeal, with an after-dinner speech by Tricia Stewart, the originator and driving force behind the “Alternative WI Calendar”. The event will also include a charity auction presided over by Mr Ernie Coe, the well-known Northumbrian raconteur.

Tickets cost £35 per head and are available from
Dr Carolyn Reid: 01670 515 308
or Christine Sadler: 01661 831 872.

If you are unable to make the ball, but still wish to make a donation, you can donate online:

£700 raised at fancy dress party

NHS staff partied in style this Hallowe’en to raise over £700 for Radio Lollipop in Newcastle.

The now-annual A&E fancy dress party was very well supported and guests ranged from the grim reaper to Mr and Mrs Incredible. There were lots of witches and ghosts to be seen and a great time was had by all.

Radio Lollipop provided prize bags for the winners of the best fancy dress competition.

The volunteers and children at the Royal Victoria Infirmary would like to thank Deborah from Minor Injuries and all of the people who helped to organise the event. A big thanks also goes out to the Leazes Road Labour Club who waived their fee for the room hire in order to allow more money to go to Radio Lollipop.

Thanks to all for your efforts.

Radio lollipop glasgow awarded £6,000

Radio Lollipop, which is based in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow are delighted to announce that BBC Children In Need, have awarded Radio Lollipop a grant of £6,000, over the next three years. This grant will help fund their essential play services.

Radio Lollipop is one of many projects in the UK, who have received a grant which is made possible by the generous support of the public in 2009, which amounted to an amazing total of £20,309,747!

Radio Lollipop believes in the healing power of play – providing smiles and laughter to children at a time when they need it most.

One in four children are admitted to a hospital before reaching age 14. Though some patients are short-stay, many have a recurring need for care and return repeatedly to hospital. Some who are terminally ill, spend much of their short lives in hospital.

Radio Lollipop gives young patients a voice and a choice during their stay. While they can´t say “no” to taking their medicine or receiving treatment, they can request their favourite songs, win prizes and hear their own voices on the radio. Those activities give youngsters a haven of normality in the hospital day which in other respects is strange, different and often scary.

Stephen Quinn Radio Lollipop (Glasgow)’s Press & Pr Officer added “It’s a fantastic achievement for our volunteers who work so hard, to keep children happy, as laughter is after all, the best medicine. We were recently awarded the Best Team in the West of Glasgow at the Glasgow Community Champion Awards and all of this on top of our charities 30th Birthday. A big THANK YOU to everyone involved!”

David Ramsden, Chief Executive of BBC Children in Need, said “Our grants are made possible by the amazing generosity of the public. They make it possible for us to help such great projects like Radio Lollipop who continue to help change young lives for the better.”
