“lion, the witch and the wardrobe” raise funds for new zealand

Today was the annual fundraising event for Radio Lollipop New Zealand, which consists of three live children’s stage show.

This year it was the “Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. The event is organised by Southern Stars Charitable Trust and Radio Lollipop New Zealand is one of six charities that benefit from one of the six different shows they stage each year.

A total of $89,000 NZ was raised with a further $2,506.45 NZ through other donations and people at the show donating cash.

For the sister branches in Australia and the US there was some strange money in the boxes – $Aus2.00 and a US 1 cent coin!

Jumping for lollipop

Volunteer, Kara McCurrach, went one step further than most to show how much she supports the charity. On 10 September at 2.30pm, she gathered her courage, faced her fears and bungee jumped. Here is her story:

“I would describe myself as curious and adventurous and never satisfied when there is something I’ve not tried and experienced. A bungee was something I’d always wanted to try. Although, I do admit it has always petrified me. But out of nosiness I’ve always wanted to do it and I figured if I was really going to put myself through it, I really ought to do it for a fantastic cause like Radio Lollipop.

On my way up to the jump I had many many butterflies fluttering in my stomach. I was ecstatic. I remember asking the instructor how to jump and he said ‘I will count you to three, don’t even think about it and ……….jump!’

1..2..3 and off I jumped.

Well how would I describe it? In three whole words……NEVER and EVER and AGAIN!!!!!!!!

I can honestly say it was the scariest thing I’ve ever ever done. It seemed to last forever. I really didn’t think I was going to stop falling on time. I kept my eyes open but can’t remember any of what I saw…….

Now that its over, I am really glad I did it. With hindsight, I have done something I have always wanted to do and know how a bungee jump feels (all be it that it was very scary and horrible he he he). But the most important thing was that I raised money for one of the best causes ever.

Funds are still coming in but I estimate my total monies raised to be above £300. I would encourage other volunteers to do something similar. It is a brilliant way to both give to people who really appreciate it and try something new for yourself.”

John lewis newcastle supports radio lollipop’s work

Radio Lollipop Newcastle have received a bumper donation of toys from their local branch of John Lewis.

After writing to the company to find out whether they would be able to supply any reduced price or free toys, the station’s fundraiser Emma Palmer was given a large donation of toys to support play work with the under 5’s.

The donation included toys which were slightly damaged when on display or may have been bought and returned. As a result, many of the toys were unsuitable for sale in the store for cosmetic reasons but were incredibly useful as gifts for patients at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

We would encourage any stores who have similar toys to consider donating them to their local Radio Lollipop station. You would be amazed what we can achieve with toys that would otherwise just be thrown away.

Radio Lollipop Newcastle would like to thank Denise Nunn and Leslie Slavin at John Lewis for their efforts in rescuing the toys for Radio Lollipop.

If you think that your business, school or leisure group would be able to help your local Radio Lollipop station in ny way…please get in touch via the “contact” page here on the website. No donation is too small and it’s not just money that we collect!
