The Governor of Queensland visits Radio Lollipop Brisbane

Radio Lollipop Brisbane was honoured to receive a visit from the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC.

The Radio Lollipop team and children at the Lady Cilento Hospital were delighted to welcome him into the studio.

We put the Governor of Queensland in the studio interview chair so the children could listen in and ask him questions, here’s what we found out:

Favourite part about being the Governor of Queensland:

The Governor is often travelling across the State meeting with various community groups, mayors and business delegates, and really enjoys meeting everyday people. His favourite part of the role is getting to learn about different people, community groups and organisations.

Which exciting places have you been able to visit and who have you met?

The Governor has met Her Majesty The Queen, and also met President Obama during the G20 summit in Brisbane. He enjoys meeting and talking with the Queenslanders that he takes great pride in representing.

There’s a new Avengers movie out at the moment, who would you say is your favourite superhero?

The Governor’s a fan of Iron Man but his favourite avenger was the Incredible Hulk, as the Governor used to read about him and see him in movies when he was growing up.

And if you could have any super power, what would it be?

Being able to fly or being invisible would be great, but he believes that the ability to make people smile and be happy is a real super power (just like our Lollipop Playmakers do every shift!).

Song request for the night: ‘Let it Go’ from the movie Frozen – the kids gave this a big thumbs up!

Major radio stations unite for Radio Lollipop on 28 June 2013

Major radio stations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast will create history when they join forces for Radio Lollipop on Friday 28 June. This is an important story for all Queensland families!

Imagine just for a moment spending time in hospital. You’ve never been to hospital before, and everything you see and hear feels unfamiliar and a little scary. Doctors and nurses keep coming in and out of the room… a room you have to share with strangers, all at a time when you feel stressed and unwell. Now imagine for a moment this happening to you as a small child…

Our team of Radio Lollipop volunteers support children in hospital with a range of entertainment and activities that brighten their day, but the biggest toy in our toy box is the RADIO. Nothing is more powerful than watching a child smile for the first time all day because they heard their name on the radio, or seeing a child forget their cares as they sing along to their favourite song.

Our Radio Lollipop volunteers share experiences like these with more than 12,000 Queensland kids every year! And now more than ever they need YOUR help!

Eight major radio stations in South East Queensland are rising to the challenge including Brisbane’s 4BC, 4BH, B105, 4MMM, 4KQ, 97.3FM, 106.9 Nova FM, 612 ABC and Gold Coast ABC. So listen out for Radio Lollipop on Friday 28 June and help us raise $250,000 so that Radio Lollipop can relocate to three new Queensland children’s hospitals.

Carpe Noctem Events supports Radio Lollipop Brisbane

The team from Carpe Noctem Events recently held a fun-filled 1920’s themed night with guests sifting through clues to guess “who done it?” at The Landing Dockside. The night raised over $3,800 for Radio Lollipop Brisbane.
Master of ceremonies, the infamous Detective Moseby ran the event with performers acting out scenes, clues and characters for the attendees to help decipher and win the game! All attendees had the opportunity to dress as 1920’s flappers and gangsters and were given character profiles prior to the night. All the guests were suspects in the murder and it was their duty to prove their innocence and solve the crime!

There were photo booths and professional photographers taking photos throughout the night, check out Radio Lollipop Brisbane Chairperson Melissa Dixon and Fundraising Co-ordinator Ashleigh Boutell with the Carpe Noctem Events team.

Thank you to the Carpe Noctem Events team for their support of Radio Lollipop Brisbane.

Funky Friday believe they can fly

It was a busy night for our Radio Lollipop volunteers on the Funky Friday team with lots of children in need of cheering up, and they were thankful for their friends at the Royal Australian Air Force who paid us a visit to help cheer up the children in hospital.

The children made rocket ships and our resident pilots talked to the children about what its really like flying up high in the sky. The children kept us busy all night in the studio by requesting songs and asking lots of tricky questions to our RAAF friend Sam who revealed his love for children’s music and dedicated a Peter Coombe song called ‘Toffee Apple’ for all the children listening on the radio!

It was a memorable night for so many children and our Radio Lollipop volunteers.

Thank you to our RAAF friends. You made brought so much joy to the Mater Hospital at Radio Lollipop. We hope you will fly in again soon!!
